Big Data is expected to provide solutions for major societal challenges in Europe, such as improved efficiency in healthcare information processing, social security, public safety and wellbeing, transportation and many more. MARVEL will contribute to the broader familiarisation of citizens to Big Data technologies and accelerate their adoption through increasing awareness of their benefits and value, thus fostering more informed, educated, and participatory citizens. Consequently, this will have a significant impact on the acquisition of digital skills that will lead to the cover the increasing need for higher added value jobs in the fields of data science, AI and software engineering.

MARVEL takes into account the butterfly effect and its impact on Smart Cities together with the necessity to use data more strategically. Consequently, MARVEL is expected to realise societal opportunities in the Smart City domain by exploiting efficient proactive processing and reliable predictions based on sound/image recognition analyses in order to provide (almost) real-time response to incidents happening at different locations within the city. The provision of smart services related to public safety, wellbeing/care and transportation in urban environments will have a profound impact on the quality of life of citizens who comprise an indispensable endowment to smart cities. 

MARVEL’s impact on the Smart Cities


Rising demand for smart city solutions is anticipated to be driven by factors such as growing urban population, need to better manage limited natural resources, and increasing focus on environmental sustainability. MARVEL envisions to enable 

  • technology providers (namely, SMEs and R&I centres) currently focused on IoT-based services and smart technologies to exploit the MARVEL disruptive edge computing tools for multimodal extreme-scale analytics in Smart Cities applications by entering (or expanding) their presence in this emerging field.
  • local authorities to further expand the Smart Cities market by engaging such technology providers and enriching the smart services provided in their areas.

MARVELs impact on the EU Data Market and the Data Economy

  • In light of the emerging market needs and business opportunities, MARVEL aspires to successfully penetrate the market through the provision of a comprehensive technology framework that leverages big data technologies and extreme-scale analytics to capture the vibe of cities and provide insights and predictive capability of major outdoor events. Through the provision of its tools and services in the promising Smart City sector (validated through business cases with the Municipality of Trento and Greenroads-Malta) based on the Big Data Value Chain approach, MARVEL will enable public and private stakeholders (end-users and technology providers) to exploit big data efficiently, reliably and securely and, therefore, increase their market share and improve the services provided to citizens and their customers.

  • MARVEL is also expected to provide a significant boost towards economic growth with the creation of more added value jobs by:
    • bringing big data analytics to the next evolutionary level, exploiting complementary processing steps from audio-visual material originating from heterogeneous data sources in order to set the ground for early anomaly detection and event identification in demanding urban outdoor environments. 
    • familiarising all project stakeholders from the public sector and the general public with the trend of big data and extreme scale analytics, advocating the benefits and preparing them for the transformation of the sector. 
    • contributing to the upgrade and future transformation of the Smart City domain sector, boosting industries and SMEs with an increased market share, thus creating more job opportunities for high-skilled data professionals. 
    • contributing to digital skill acquisition of people from an early stage through the incorporation of latest big data technologies in educational and research programmes (achieved by the academic partners of the project).

MARVEL’s impact on Microelectromechanical system microphone market

MARVEL envisions to significantly support the MEMs microphone market by supporting its merger with IoT applications; it will enable MARVEL relevant partners (both industries, namely Infineon, and SMEs / technology providers) to

  • improve their innovation capacity, in terms of enhancing their products towards IoT-based exploitation
  • increase their market share based on the aforementioned exploitation.
