Big Data technologies at the service of the citizens!
Welcome to the first Newsletter of MARVEL, an EU H2020 funded project striving to create a framework that will empower smart city authorities to better support their citizens, utilizing a set of technologies in the area of AI, analytics, multimodal perception, software engineering and High-Performance Computing as part of an Edge-Fog-Cloud Computing Continuum paradigm.
MARVEL will collect, analyse and data-mine multimodal audio-visual streaming data, to improve the quality of life and services to citizens within a smart city, without violating ethical and privacy limits, in an AI-responsible manner.
17 Partners started this challenging journey and, within a short period of four (4) months, have already made significant steps forward.

Our first scientific publication!
The paper “Enabling energy efficient machine learning on a Ultra-Low-Power vision sensor for IoT” was presented at the SLOHA 2021 conference by the FBK team.
Our first public deliverable!
MARVEL’s first public deliverable related to the project website development is available at Zenodo.
We would like to share our thoughts and whenever possible some insights regarding our progress as a consortium. This should allow us to maintain an open dialogue with everyone interested in and / or influenced by MARVEL. We invite you to share your thoughts as well, not only related to the topics we touch, but also related to anything around MARVEL’s objectives. You can see our first blogs below:

MARVEL @ DATAWEEK – MARVEL will be present at Data Week, a spring gathering of the European Big Data and Data-Driven AI research and innovation community. Do not miss “Building the data-agile economy from the demand side: evolving business drivers and digital transformation scenarios” and “Big Data and AI Pipelines in Big Data PPP projects from a Technology analysis and benchmarking perspective” sessions with MARVEL representatives as invited speakers.

MARVEL @ International Joint Conference on Neural Networks 2021 – At least 2 MARVEL consortium partners will be present at IJCNN2021. Prof. A. Iosifidis from Aarhus University will present the scientific paper he co-authored, entitled: “The Accuracy of Early Exits in Multi-Exit Architectures via Curriculum Learning” and Tampere University, along with partners from Europe, organizes the special session “Representation Learning for Audio, Speech, and Music Processing”.
